Since a few days when I try to copy or move files on my macbook, I often get an error message saying «This operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -8062)». And then it just quits the copy or move.

I searched a lot on the internet, but only found solutions for cases you cannot empty the trash due to this issue.

I tried those solutions for my trash and that helped after some trying.

However, I still have the problem with copying and moving files.

I even cannot install new software now, as it has to copy itself to the programs-directory, and gives the same error-message.

Who can help me??

Cannot seem to find any info on it on the support-forums or elsewhere.

My user-account is administrator, I use a 13″ Macbook Aluminium (Late 2008). Mac OS X 10.6.8 CPU 2Ghz Intel Core Duo, RAM: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.

SOLVED: Turning off iCloud Drive fixed the issue for me.

The weak variable error in the console is misleading. The logging mechanism was changed for macOS Sierra. Use the paste command into a terminal to view time machine errors:

log show —predicate ‘subsystem == «com.apple.TimeMachine»‘ —info —last 4h | grep Error

I saw lines containing starting with:

Error: (-34) SrcErr:NO Copying Copying /Users/myusername/Library/Mobile Documents/ …

The mobile folder is used by iCloud drive, so I turned that off. That allowed the backup to complete. Hope this helps others that are experiencing this issue. Hopefully the final version of 10.12.3 fixes this.

I have to copy a very large Time Machine backup file to another disk before resetting RAID 1 on my LaCie 4 GB 2Big drive. File is about 350 GB. After getting through about 2/3rd of it, I am getting an error saying » .. you don’t have permissions to copy some items. » and when I click OK, then I get an error code — 8062.

I am using MBA Mid July 2011, OS X 10.8.4, Time Machine backup on LaCie 4 GB 2Big RAID 1 drive to FreeAgen 1 TB.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this. It has happened twice now and since the process takes a very long time, I have wasted three days on it now.

Helpful answers

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it’s very slow and sometimes doesn’t work at all.

Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term «Duplicate.» Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased . That shouldn’t be a problem, because you don’t want to mix backup and non-backup data on the same drive anyway. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

If the destination volume is smaller than the source volume, a file copy will be performed, rather than a block copy. It probably won’t work any better than copying in the Finder, but you can try it.

In general, though, you shouldn’t need to copy backup data at all. If you want to retire a backup device, put it aside until you’re sure you’ll no longer need the data on it, then erase it.

This is the only fle, a Time Machine Backup of my MBA, that I have tried to copy from LaCie 4 GB 2Big drive to the FreeAgen 1 TB drive. I don’t have any other files that are even a GB size. I also only need/neede to do this so that I can have a backup copy of what is on the «good» darive of my LaCie 4 TB 2Big. The LaCie was set up in a RAID 1 configuration and one of the drives in the Mirror state failed. I want to save a copy of what is on the «good» drive so that I can reconfigure RAID 1 (MIRRORED) on the LaCie with a new drive without fear of losing the existing data.

I have copied my iPhoto Library, about 49 GB in size, from my MBA HD to the FreeAgent drive successfully.

FYI, I am using MBA that I have admin rights to, the data on LaCie is Time Machine backup from my MBA so it is a puzzle why there would be any permission issues at all.
