iPF750 4050 errors after replacing printhead and maintenance cartridge
Hello all, I’ve got an iPF750 that was showing a bad printhead last week. Replaced the printhead but the maintenance cartridge had less than I thought left on it and it coded while replenishing ink. Got that overnighted and began again. This time the got a 03800500-2F41 error. I noticed the Y line had some air in it. Checked for leaks, etc and didn’t see any. Saw the purge unit may be a little built up so cleaned the pads (one of them would not clean to white), the base and the blades, reset and checked the printhead and tried again. Now got an E161-4050 error. Noticed air now in both the Y and C lines near the printhead. Checked my connections again and was advised the new printhead may be bad. Got another one. Still same error except now all 3 colors have air in the lines. Also, the printer is showing the ink tanks are nearly empty however they are all nearly full (I’m assuming the system is thinking the ink is flowing and basing ink levels on operations. Other notes: purge unit appears to be working normally when the gear is turned, no defects on the lip, absorber looks level and when I suppressed the lever for the supply valve I did see the ink move a little then return. I’ve been trying to rap my head around this for a few days and am worried I’m missing something obvious and wanted to double check before I started replacing the tubes and or joints. Already have a lot of time and money into the issue and the customer is still down. Any suggestions or questions would be appreciated.

Just an update, supply valve opens but no ink flows from the color side. Blacks flow fine. Thinking bad purge unit maybe or could it be something else?

Re: iPF750 4050 errors after replacing printhead and maintenance cartridge
the fastest way to understand is to go to service mode and perform a couple of head b cleans.
If you don’t see ink moving through the tubes and into the head — it might be purge unit.
There are also some manual procedures for checking the purge unit (which I have personally put into the forum) — so use the search button…
By the way — your problem could be also electric so don’t count only on mechanics.

I had seen your posts earlier and they were helpful. Replaced the purge yesterday and after replacing more ink it started working.

Just want to thank you @WhoDatXLIV, not only for posting a really detailed summary of the problem, but also following up later with the solution. I’ve got an iPF755 that is showing the exact same symptoms you described, right down to the same error codes and near empty C M and Y ink tubes.
I’ve ordered a purge unit and will try replacing it when it comes in. Hopefully that solves the problem, as it did for you.
Thank you to all who post such helpful info on this forum. It’s a great resource!

Common on all IPFs. Cap absorbers get plugged in the purge unit and techs replace the purge unit. Remove the absorbers, poke a paper clip end into the little holes where the absorbers sit to clean the gunk out of them. Put in new absorbers(make sure they are in properly). Cheat the cover and fire it up. Tubes fill immediately. I’ve done this on many 750s…takes about 15 minutes total

Yes you are 100% right it was likely the cap absorber on the color side causing the problem. After I took the printer apart and got a really close look at the old purge unit, the cap absorber on that side was swollen and buckled. I had come across some other reports of a similar issue—always seems to happen on the color side. Anyway, so the head wasn’t able to seal on that side, which I’m sure caused the issue.
Live and learn. Obviously the new purge unit came with new cap absorbers installed, so that solved my issue. But yeah, I am just going to keep some spare cap absorpers on hand and change them out proactively.

Yes, I carry them for all ipfs…I work on them quite often. A lot of times I just remove them and flush them out with water or isopropyl(depends which model). But make sure to clean out the tiny little hole in the rubber «floor» where the absorber sits with a paper clip end and ensure little rubber tabs are sitting on top of installed absorbers. I’ve went in after other techs who changed absorbers and still air in the lines because of this.

Dish Soap & hot water (as hot as your hands can take it) works delightfully. Also a toothbrush to scrub out the crevices. You don’t have to dry them out … they’re porous, when they aren’t clogged up solid. =^..^=
If you’d like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you’ve read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you’re going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you’re going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
