If you have been experiencing issues getting the Steam launcher to launch Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis, you are not alone, and there is a way to fix it.
Start by holding down both the windows key (the one with the windows logo on your keyboard) and R. After this, copy and paste %appdata% into a prompt that will appear on your screen.
This will then take you to your computer’s Appdata folder, and you will then need to create a folder if it doesn’t already exist called Sega.

Then inside the folder, create another called PHANTASYSTARONLINE2_NA_STEAM by right-clicking and hold your cursor over new and then folder.
Once that’s done, open that folder up and create a small text file called steamupdate.txt, and then put v7000_rc_135 inside the text file.
After this, you should be able to launch the Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis again and download any updates for the game. As a side note, do not verify the files or the game will simply redownload the game, wasting your time.
That said, here’s a recap on what you need to do to fix the steam launcher.

PSO2 NGS Not Launching on Steam How To Fix
“An update for the game file has been detected” FIX
The first and working solution is as follows:
- Press Win+R to open the Run Window
- Type %LocalAppData% in the box and press Enter.
- Make a directory called “SEGA” if it doesn’t exist yet and Open it.
- Create a directory called “PHANTASYSTARONLINE2_NA_STEAM” if it doesn’t exist yet. Open it.
- Make a file name “steamupdate.txt” by right-clicking > New > Text Document
- What I did was simply make a new notepad and named it steamupdate.
- Open it in Notepad to be safe.
- Put the text v70000_rc_135 inside the notepad and save it.
Now launch the game, and it should hopefully work for you. I tried this method and it worked quite well to launch the game!

Add an Exception for PSO2 NGS in Antivirus
Ideally, if you happen to use an anti-virus, go to its settings and navigate to exceptions. For me it is Quickheal. add the folder or the PSO2 NGS specific exe to that list and save it. If you did it correctly, the antivirus should not pick it us as a threat and it should be all good from there!
Update Graphics Drivers and Windows version
This is a very common troubleshooting tip that a lot of us overlook due to its simplicity. Sometimes, updating a driver (I would suggest all) and the Windows version can fix launching and/or crashing issues. So I highly recommend you do this to be on the safe side.
I am on the constant lookout for more working solutions for the issue. I myself, am enjoying the game quite a bit. Having no prior PSO2 knowledge, this is my first time diving into this world. PSO2 New Genesis won’t launch or crashing – Is Phantasy Star Online 2 crashing or won’t launch for you after downloading the New Genesis update? Here are some troubleshooting methods you can try to potentially fix your issues.
PSO2 New Genesis is crashing and won’t launch for PC users
The System Requirements of New Genesis is higher that PSO2
If you didn’t know, the system requirements for PSO2 New Genesis are way different from Phantasy Star Online 2. Previously, PSO2 required you to have just an Intel i5 processor and a GTX 750 ti to be able to play the game at 1080p@60fps. Things have changed after the New Genesis update. Here are the system requirements for Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis:

As you can see, the difference is quite drastic. It went from 750ti for 1080p@60fps to RTX 2070 Super. Now, some of you might think that it is the same game. New Genesis is just an expansion. You see, apart from the graphics overhaul, the game also allows up to 32 people to play at the same location, at the same time. So you might easily see 32 players pop up on your screen during a boss fight. And that is what these new system requirements are for.
Uninstall PSO2 and then download PSO2 New Genesis
I am guessing that a lot of you already had Phantasy Star Online 2 installed. And all you did was update your game to New Genesis. Do not do that! I was personally getting some weird error message after updating PSO2 to New Genesis. So what I did was, I uninstalled PSO2 via Steam. And then installed PSO2 New Genesis on a completely different location. Also, if you haven’t noticed, there is a huge difference between the sizes of PSO2 and New Genesis. PSO2 was 80 GB while PSO2 New Genesis requires you to have 103 GB of free space.
No Windows 10 = No launch
Pretty straightforward. Doesn’t matter if the game was originally released in 2012. If you do not have Windows 10 64 bit, then you won’t be able to play the game. Windows 7 and 8.1 users are out of luck here.
Fix for “An update for the game file has been detected.” error
This is for users who are getting an error message whenever they are trying to launch Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis. The message goes something like this:
An update for the file has been detected. Restarting application.
Please do not cancel when checking the consistency.
Follow this Steamcommunity guide, and you should be able to fix it. [This solution has been suggested by Steam user /Dozer]
Update : I downloaded PSO2 New Genesis via the Epic Games Launcher, and it looks like this issue is mainly happening to Steam users. The EGL version launches without any issue.
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
Make sure you have Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installed. If you don’t, you can install it from here.
Disable Anti-virus or add PSO2 New Genesis on the Exception list
Either try disabling your Anti-Virus software temporarily and then run PSO2: NG, or add exceptions for PSO2: NG in your Anti-virus configuration.
The reason being, some anti-virus software hook very deep into user systems and can affect disk and network operations, which can cause crashes in games. Some games also use copy protection technology that can appear as malicious software to an AV scanner, resulting in potential false-positive alerts.
I do not have any more methods at the moment. But I am constantly keeping an eye on the Forums, looking for new fixes. Yes, there are some other stuff you can try like verifying the files on Steam or Epic Games Launcher. But I am not sure how useful those methods are.
